Learning the prayer from the Prophetic model

This module presents the physical sequence of salah alongside the recitations and primary textual evidence. The governing Prophetic instruction is: “Pray as you have seen me praying.” The presentation distinguishes core movements from details in which recognized schools of Islamic law may differ.

Primary sources

Qur’an 4:103 — prayer is prescribed for believers at appointed times.

Sahih al-Bukhari 631 — the Prophet ﷺ instructed Muslims to pray as they had seen him pray.

Sahih al-Bukhari 757 — sequence and tranquillity in standing, bowing, prostration, and sitting.

Conditions before beginning
Ritual purityWudu, or the applicable form of purification, must be established.
Prayer timeThe prescribed time for the prayer must have entered.
QiblahFace the direction of the Ka'bah when able.
CoveringThe required 'awrah is covered appropriately for prayer.
CleanlinessBody, clothing, and place of prayer are free from ritual impurity.
IntentionNiyyah is the inward intention to perform the particular prayer.

Academic note: This guide teaches the broadly shared structure of Sunni salah. Details such as hand placement, raising the hands at particular transitions, finger movement in tashahhud, and some recitations have recognized juristic differences. These should not be presented as though one valid school is the only form of Sunnah.
